John and Asha are currently reaching out to abandoned children in the shanties/streets, with a 6 part strategy , leading to a two fold objective.
1 – Clothing.
Better clothing will be provided for these children. Many of them have never experienced the luxury of underwear, and occasionally John and Asha come across children who have no clothes at all.
2 – Health care.
These children have NO access to health care of any kind, apart from what the Chackos provide. Some of them have T B, and most of them are suffering from the side effects of malnutrition, and pollution from the air and the garbage dumps. A lot of them also have worms in their stomachs from eating rotten food from the garbage cans.
If funds are available when they discover the needs, they do what they can, including a visit to the doctor. The Chackos are so dedicated to the welfare of these children that they are prepared to risk catching a T B infection from these children, when they have them in their home. The Lord has graciously protected them from this infection.
3 – Shelter.
Until recently, the Chackos could only offer their home as shelter for an evening, for these destitute children. However, we are very excited about the new Daya Vihar Orphanage which has recently been opened in two rented rooms, just a few minutes walk from the Chackos’ home.
4- Surrogate parenting.
It is hard for some in the developed nations to really understand the plight of abandoned children in the Third World. Their lives are very fragile, because they are right down at the bottom of an already poverty stricken economy. The adults around them are in a desperate struggle for their own survival, so these children have NOBODY to care for them. Some of them have been abandoned and left on the street as young or as infants, and they grow with the rest of the abandoned and wandered aimlessly ever since, struggling to stay ahead of starvation, infection and pollution.
John and Asha have chosen to become surrogate parents to these precious little lives. They look to John and Asha to do for them what parents would normally do. When they come to the Chackos house, they feed them, bathe them and wash their clothes. Then they spend time teaching them such practical things as hygiene, manners and other important things that would not otherwise learn. These children think of the Chackos as their parents, because nobody else has ever shown love towards them. Their original parents abandoned them, sometimes at such a young age that they have no recollection of their real parents. For as long as they can remember, they have been wandering aimlessly in the streets.
5 – Basic education.
Asha is a teacher, and teaches the basics of reading to the children. Now al the children goes to school and they are studying very well.
The Chacko`s ministry has grown steadily since 1992,
and recently they reached a major milestone.
In the year 2003 they had formed a trust known as
“ COMPASSION CHARITABLE TRUST”
and registered the same with
the Charity Commission of Maharashtra, and with the
Income tax Department Of India. IT 12A and
they got the 80G IT exemption certificate.
